Self portrait with Violas
This was one of my first more experimental self portraits. It is about life-sized and centers the debilitating, chronic back pain I've experienced for many years. This piece explores the reoccurring imagery I have of invasive roots pushing into the muscles and bones of my back. I wanted to depict this in the most literal way I could, so I cut holes and literally planted living violas in my back where I experience the most pain. Although the flowers are beautiful they represent this ever-present pain I live with. The delicacy of the plants is a perfect representation of how careful I have to be constantly to not aggravate the pain.
