Casey; she/her; Mast Cell Activation Syndrome
Mast Cell Activation Syndrome is a somewhat rare atopic disorder (a disorder involving allergic reactions) which affect up to 30% of the population. MCAS is characterized by episodes of anaphylaxis with symptoms such as hives, swelling, difficulty breathing, low blood pressure, etc.
This subject described the painful, burning hives she experiences with her disorder, and chose stinging nettles to represent her symptoms. The burning pain from a nettle sting parallels the sensation of her irritated skin.
